OOC: Straw Hat Crew brainstorming
Shh! This is top secret crew plotting!
Sort of. :)
This post is to discuss OOCly what is happening with Sanji's boat, as well as the plans the pirates may want to make for sailing said boat, and/or accomplishing piratey things in the near future!
So, here's the skinny on the boat: Ysera dredged up a 30-foot sailboat that was scuttled in the Caribbean Sea, possibly by drug runners or smugglers. The interior of the boat was undamaged, intact, but waterlogged. It hadn't been under the water long enough to grow serious barnacles or other rot problems. It did, however, lack a mast - it was snapped off near the bulkhead. With the mast went the sails as well. It's been re-floated and has aired out enough that it only smells a little musty inside, and Sanji's been cleaning it as best he can. Usopp was tapped to handle regular repairs to anything that needed them, but the mast may be outside of his expertise.
I've looked up various 30-foot sailboat models online and they all look different and have different stuff inside. There isn't much of a forward deck on most of them, and the below-decks area is pretty much just a small galley and the sleeping area(s). I'm sure that instead of a bedroom or one bed, they'll need to convert it to have enough small bunks and/or hammocks for everyone in the crew. But we're free to determine how the ship looks, we don't have to pick a particular make and model and say it looks exactly like that because I say so. :3
Now, being as Ysera gifted the boat to Sanji, and it's technically his, I've been sort of handling the what's-what of the boat up to this point. But he's not going to be possessive of it, no "mine mine I'm in charge here" crap - the boat belongs to the crew, as far as he's concerned, and Luffy is captain, so decisions can be made as a crew together. This includes plans for going sailing.
Greer and I were shooting the breeze a while back and thought, wouldn't it be hilarious if they ended up in an area where modern-day pirates are a problem, and by virtue of being mistaken for tourists and attacked by some of said pirates, got themselves a reputation and possibly bounty in this world? There are areas off the coast of Venezuela that are vulnerable to pirates, some of which can be connected with Columbian drug cartels and the like. That's also a very popular tourist area (Trinidad, Antigua, etc). Though the Straw Hats in canon aren't exactly law-abiding, they're also not the pillage-and-loot kind and tend to get their reputations and bounties by taking down other pirates or actual bad guys instead of pillaging innocent islanders. Thus, if they got attacked and simply crushed the poor native pirates who had no idea what they were getting into, they'd almost instantly get bounties from the cartels.
THAT SAID...here's what I put up a post to discuss!
1. Do we want to have the crew responsible for repairing the mast (e.g. Luffy or Zoro finding a tree, Usopp doing the manual labor to install it as a mast) or should Sanji just take his millions from selling the club and pay some guy at some marina to put up a new mast and get new sails?
2. I think Usopp needs to paint the Straw Hat jolly roger on the new sails. Y/Y?
3. Do we want to take the crew outside the City for say, a month, in order to sail to the Caribbean and explore? HEY LUFFY THERE'S A BERMUDA TRIANGLE
4. If we do go off sailing, do we want to get them in trouble and let them get bounties?
5. Do we want to log some of this? All of it? None of it? Handwave parts and post other parts?
6. What should they do for a navigator without Nami - the almighty GPS?
7. WHAT SHOULD WE NAME OUR SHIP!!! Also if the crew can't come to consensus on a name - or even before they start discussing - should we open it to the comm at large? Let Luffy or Sanji post asking for suggestions?
A side note regarding actually sending them out of the City for a month or so: because of the comms, they can still essentially be part of the game. Sailing won't cause any of us to put our characters on hiatus for that time - Sanji was gone for an entire month in November/December and still used his comm to stay in touch with people in the City, even if he wasn't physically there to get involved in matters. Fortunately, that was also during a point in the game when there really wasn't anything in the City to get involved with anyway, so he didn't miss anything. If we do decide to take a Straw Hat field trip, I would agree that it should be coordinated with any upcoming city-wide plots so that anyone who wanted to be in-City for them didn't miss out.
I think that's all for now. This post is completely open for discussion, pin or track it as needed and have at you! Sanji, Zoro, Luffy, Usopp, Chopper, and Kuina are the automatic crew members; if Luffy has decided ICly to recruit new crew members, they can be included as well. Oh and I guess if Rayleigh has anything to say, he can chime in too. ;)
Oh I also just wanted a heads-up from the post-timeskip characters about which details about the future they absolutely would, and absolutely would not, tell Sanji (and Nami and Chopper). I can say for myself that Sanji would have pressed just to make sure everybody was safe and healthy and looking good after two years, but he would have asked for as little detail about himself as possible - to the point of forcing anyone who tried to tell him about how Kamabakka traumatized him to SHUT UP ALREADY. But I'm still curious as to whether any of them would have voluntarily told him about Marineford and Ace, so I know if he knows or if he doesn't.

I'm gonna try to get choppaa involved with this.. evil pigeon/rat thing. and there has been talk of cynthia mistaking him for a pokemon and catching him, so I'm not sure I want to cart him away for a lot of time. also I am slow and school is busy NORMALLY...
I do think a mass pirate log would be great in any case

I'm not sure where chopper has been staying but I think he's been pretty nervous to go outside without his friends. so basically anyone can count him as a tag along when they go anywhere or do anyhting. silly chopper. you don't get agency.

Well, considering after Zoro punched holes in walls to essentially connect his MAC apartment with Sanji and Usopp's, and I think they deliberately connected Luffy's also...I mean sure Chopper probably can crash in his own apartment but when the boys have already made one giant flat with holes in walls and broken furniture everywhere THANKS LUFFY, why would he want to stay anywhere else? XD At least he should know where to go to get fed every day.
And I totally want Chopper to tag along with Sanji at the grocery store. OOO and if you want him to go to a bookstore or something, Sanji's always up for that!

it's okay bb I understand. You're here now, though, and your opinion is just as important to me. I like the idea of a comm post for naming it, I just want to flip a coin to see who gets to post it - Sanji, Usopp, or Luffy. :3
